Skyrocketing drug usage in our nation
In the past, drug use has been on the rise. We have been hearing in the last few years of overdoses in our Churches, news that no one wants to ever hear.
A recent drug, named Fentanyl, has been skyrocketing in usage in our nation. Fentanyl is 50-100x stronger than morphine, a strong drug that can have deadly consequences. Fentanyl has been recently gaining lots of traction and heavy usage, especially by younger teens. During Covid, 3 teens a week died from Fentanyl overdose in the Seattle area. The situation in Tacoma is no better. This drug has crept in from the world, and into our churches.
You may ask, why announce this at church? A few days ago, a young teen from our church was taken to the hospital because of an overdose. By God’s grace he survived.
We as Church leaders must speak about the reality of the things around us. And we will do it. If we ever want to grow in Christ, we must confess our wrong and bring to light all the dark things, sins, wrongdoing, secret sins. Only then can we have progress and growth in Christ.
As church leaders, we will also take appropriate legal action, we will be contacting law enforcement. Our Church and School property is a drug and alcohol-free zone, that gives legal right to double the consequences for those who sell, distribute, and share drugs or alcohol. At this point, we will not remain silent.
Besides the legal action, we will also contact TPD and TFD or Fire Agencies to come and speak about drugs, specifically Fentanyl. We will reach out to the professionals and ask them to inform us about these dangers. We will announce the dates coming up soon. Please do not think your child or you are exempt from sin, as drugs, alcohol, porn, etc. Sin is sin and we must call it out.
The one answer we do have is that Jesus Christ is able to help. He is able to protect, guide, encourage, strengthen, give life, and hope. We will be asking Him for protection, we will thank him for those who consumed drugs but remained alive, we will ask Jesus to lead His Church in this 21st Century.
